Description
The cylinder head cover seals the upper valve train on the N13 engine. This cylinder head cover is suitable for BMW vehicles with N13 engines, including 118i, 120i and 316i. A cracked housing or distorted sealing surface can cause oil leakage that returns after a gasket-only repair. Replacing the cover addresses the housing as well as its role in closing the engine.
Crankcase pressure should remain controlled during operation. Abnormal vacuum or pressure can point to a damaged valve or a restricted route elsewhere in the ventilation circuit.
Common reasons to inspect this part include:
- Cracks in the housing or damaged sealing surfaces.
- Oil collecting around the cylinder head cover.
- A burnt-oil smell after the engine warms up.
Inspect the sealing gasket and breather connections. Clean mating surfaces carefully and keep oil away from ignition components during the repair.
