Description
This intake-side VANOS gear is designed for compatible BMW B38, B48 and B58 petrol engines. It forms part of the variable camshaft timing system, changing the position of the intake camshaft according to engine speed, load and operating conditions.
A worn or faulty B38 VANOS gear may cause a rattling sound during startup, rough idling, sluggish acceleration or an illuminated engine warning light. Similar symptoms can occur on B48 and B58 applications, along with camshaft timing or VANOS-related diagnostic fault codes.
This unit is specifically for the intake camshaft. The intake and exhaust gears may differ, so their positions and OE references should not be interchanged. Before replacing a B48 VANOS intake unit or B58 VANOS gear, the solenoids, oil supply, timing chain and camshaft sensors should also be inspected.
Correct camshaft timing is essential during installation. This work should be completed by a qualified technician using the appropriate engine timing tools and specifications.
