Description
A cooling thermostat does more than prevent overheating. By limiting radiator flow during warm-up it helps the engine reach its normal operating range. This N46 and N42 replacement is suitable for vehicles including 118i, 120i, 318i and 320i models. A valve stuck open may make short journeys noticeably colder.
Suitable for BMW vehicles with N46 and N42 engines, including 118i, 120i, 318i and 320i.
Correct coolant protects the repaired circuit as well as the new component. Mixing unsuitable fluids or leaving air trapped in the system can reduce cooling performance.
Possible signs of wear or failure include:
- Coolant escaping around the thermostat housing.
- Slow warm-up or temperatures that stay unusually low.
- Engine temperature rising because coolant flow is restricted.
Inspect the water pump and radiator hoses for wear. Test the thermostat operation if the engine runs persistently cool or unusually hot.
