Description
The head gasket separates combustion pressure from the engine’s oil and coolant passages. This standard cylinder head gasket is suitable for BMW vehicles with N20 engines, including 125i, 220i, 228i, 320i, 328i, 420i, 428i, 520i, 528i and 20i. Failure can allow fluids or combustion gases to cross between circuits. Replacing it is part of a repair that should address the original cause.
Clean assembly and correct tightening matter throughout an engine rebuild. Inspect the related parts so the replacement works with sound surfaces and appropriate clearances.
Look out for the following symptoms:
- Compression loss or combustion gases in the cooling system.
- Unexplained coolant loss or persistent overheating.
- Oil and coolant contamination.
Check cylinder head flatness and the cooling system. Use the correct bolt procedure and inspect sealing surfaces before rebuilding the engine.
